Walking and hiking
The perfect location for a walking holiday, guests at El Solitaire can wander and
hike to their heart’s content choosing between challenging but spectacular trails
among the mountainous peaks to gentler routes along the coast, through the
valleys and around the towns. A particular favourite for many who visit the area is
the walk to the picturesque peak of La Maroma.

Cycling
The local area is also becoming increasingly well known with cyclists for its
thrilling and scenic routes that offer stunning coastal and mountain views. Road
cyclists and mountain bikers alike can choose from a network of great routes
taking in the very best of the local area with plenty of options for rest and
refuelling stops in the pretty towns and villages. Local cycle hire is easy and
highway regulations ensure that cyclists are given adequate room on the road
making the region a very pleasant place to get out and explore on two wheels.

Suspension bridge over the Almanchares river
Among the three longest in Spain, the new suspension bridge over the
Almanchares river runs along a gorge between the municipalities of Canillas de
Aceituno and Sedella, and forms part of the Gran Senda (Great Trail) circle of
walking routes around the province. Beginning in the central square of Canillas de
Aceituno, the eight mile walk offers spectacular views with every step.

Horse riding
Competa is home to a number of wonderful stables offering horse riding and pony
trekking for adults and children of all ages and abilities.

Skiing
El Solitaire is less than two hours from the Sierra Nevada; one of the highest ski
resorts in Europe and Spain’s most snow sure ski resort. With a spectacular
selection of peaks of more than 3,000m, it is great for both early and late skiing.

Las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama
The villa sits on the edge of the National Park; a 4,000 hectare mountainous
wildlife and nature reserve with which incorporates a good network of footpaths
for easy or longer walks into the hills and to explore the many different little
villages with their tiny streets, white houses and ancient churches.

Wider area and beaches
No visit to Andalucia is complete without a trip to the regional capital of Malaga or
the Moorish Alhambra Palace at Granada or the glittering beach resorts of the
Costa del Sol. The local beaches of Torrox Costa, Algarrob and Nerja (with its
famous Caves of Nerja) can be reached within 25 minutes, Malaga is just an hour
away by car and Granada and the Alhambra Palace are 1.5 hours away.
